Dark-eyed Junco come in a number of regional variations, such as “Gray-headed” Junco, “Oregon” Junco, “Pink-sided” Junco, “Red-backed” Junco, “Slate-colored” Junco, and “White-winged” Junco. The “Slate-colored” Junco is the most common variety east of the Rockies. They are a largely gray bird with a white underside. The female tend to be a lighter shade of gray, the male a darker shade.

The Dark-eyed Junco in these photos was observed at a nature park, nears the visitor’s center. It was busy feeding on the seeds under the park bird feeders. I have seen these birds often at different bird feeders. They are a simple looking bird, but I still find them fascinating to watch.
