Field NotesCHINESE MANTIS

Chinese Mantis in bushes near parking lot

Chinese Mantis are the largest mantis in North America, where it is an introduced species, being originally native to China. The Chinese Mantis often has a brownish back and striped head with a large stripe of green at the edge of the wings. As with other species of mantis, the Chinese Mantis is a predator that hunts primarily other insects, but will sometimes eat their own species, and even small animals such as reptiles or amphibians.

This particular Chinese Mantis was in a set of bushes just outside a retail establishment. Luckily I had the camera with me and was able to grab a few frames before driving away. Mantis are always fascinating creatures to watch.
